Behind the Scenes: Three Days Photographing Yugo’s Formula 1 Week Events in Barcelona

There are some projects that combine everything I love about event photography: inspiring people, genuine connections, beautiful locations and unforgettable moments. My recent three-day assignment with Yugo, the world’s leading student housing provider, was exactly that.

To celebrate Barcelona Grand Prix Week 2026, Yugo partnered with the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls Formula 1 Team (VCARB) to create a series of experiences for students living in Barcelona. Across three different events, the goal was simple: bring the excitement of Formula 1 beyond the race track and create meaningful moments for residents and university students.

As the event photographer, my role wasn’t just to document what happened, it was to capture the atmosphere, the energy and the genuine interactions that made each event unique.

Day One – VCARB Speaker Event at UPC Barcelona

The week began at the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB – UPC), where students interested in careers in motorsport had the opportunity to hear directly from a Visa Cash App Racing Bulls engineer.

The afternoon combined an inspiring career talk, audience interaction and a lively Q&A session before students showcased their own Formula Student race car project.

Events like these are about much more than speakers on a stage. I focused on documenting the curiosity, engagement and excitement shared between students and industry professionals those authentic moments that tell the real story of the event.

Day Two – Train Like a Racing Driver

The following day moved from lecture theatre to rooftop.

Residents gathered at Yugo Aleu Barcelona to experience a motorsport-inspired fitness session designed around reaction time, endurance, neck strength and core stability the same physical skills professional racing drivers develop throughout their careers.

The combination of sunshine, movement and plenty of laughter created a relaxed atmosphere where natural moments happened constantly. From determined faces during the workouts to conversations afterwards, it was a pleasure to document such an energetic afternoon.

Day Three – Final Lap Farewell Rooftop Party

The week concluded with my favourite type of event photography: people simply enjoying themselves.

Hosted on the rooftop of Yugo Aleu, the Final Lap Farewell Party celebrated the end of the academic year with stunning Barcelona sunset views, live DJ music, Formula 1 simulators, Red Bull refreshments, great food and an incredible atmosphere.

As golden hour slowly turned into blue hour, the rooftop became full of conversations, laughter, cheers and memorable moments between residents from all over the world.

This is where documentary event photography truly shines capturing authentic emotions without interrupting them.

Capturing the Energy of a Conference

One of the things I love most about being an event photographer in Barcelona is photographing conferences. There’s always such a special energy in the room, people arriving with curiosity, speakers sharing ideas, and so many conversations happening in every corner

From the outside, conferences can look quite structured: keynotes, panels, coffee breaks. But when you’re there with a camera, you quickly realise that the real magic often happens in the little moments in between.

And those are my favourite moments to capture.

The Big Moments (and the Little Ones)

Of course, conferences always have those important highlights: the keynote speaker on stage, panel discussions, applause from the audience. These moments are essential because they document the heart of the event.

But what I personally love even more are the smaller, candid interactions.

Hello, lovely readers!

Today, I’m going to talk about a place in Barcelona that every single tourist (including yours truly) seems magnetically drawn to. No, it’s not the beach, not the tapas bars, and definitely not the endless Zara stores. It’s the crown jewel of Barcelona: La Sagrada Família. Or, as I like to call it, “The Ultimate Work-in-Progress.”

Now, let’s set the scene. You step out of the metro, blink into the Spanish sunshine, and there it is. A towering, magnificent, and slightly bizarre mix of spires, cranes, and scaffolding. It’s like a gothic cathedral that decided to have a mid-life crisis and take up modern art. You’d be forgiven for thinking the cranes are permanent fixtures, perhaps left there as a tribute to the construction gods.

La Sagrada Família, designed by the one and only Antoni Gaudí, is famous for two things: its breathtaking beauty and its seemingly never-ending construction. Gaudí started working on it in 1882, and over 140 years later, it’s still not finished. I mean, I’ve had more success assembling Ikea furniture!

But let’s be honest, this never-ending construction saga is part of the charm. It’s like the cathedral equivalent of that one friend who’s perpetually late, but so fabulous you can’t stay mad. Every visit is a new experience because there’s always something different. “Oh, look! They added a new gargoyle!” or “Was that stained glass window here last year?” It’s like playing a very slow, very elaborate game of spot the difference.

On my latest visit, I joined the throngs of tourists, all craning their necks and snapping selfies. The inside is equally stunning with its tree-like columns reaching for the heavens. It’s so beautiful, you almost forget you’ve been standing in line for longer than it takes to binge-watch a season of your favorite show.

And then there’s the audio guide. Ah, the audio guide. It’s the best way to learn about the history and details of the basilica while simultaneously dodging fellow tourists and trying not to trip over small children. Pro tip: if you really want to blend in, occasionally nod thoughtfully and murmur, “fascinating,” as if you’re contemplating the deeper meaning of Gaudí’s architectural genius.

Of course, no visit is complete without a trip to the gift shop. Because nothing says, “I visited an unfinished basilica,” like a miniature replica that costs more than your weekly grocery bill. Or a tote bag. Or a snow globe. Yes, because when I think of sunny Barcelona, I definitely think of snow globes.

As I left, I couldn’t help but glance back at the majestic, still-under-construction site. There’s something truly special about La Sagrada Família, and it’s not just the architecture. It’s the story of endless creativity, patience, and a little bit of chaos – much like life itself. Plus, it gives me a great excuse to keep coming back to Barcelona. I mean, I need to check on the progress, right?

Here’s how I spent a day in Barcelona, and how you can, too—perfectly crafted for those who love to capture life through the lens and enjoy the finer things in life

Morning: Sunrise and Artisan Shops

Start with Sunrise at Park Güell

The day begins at dawn, with the first light of sunrise bathing the city in a golden hue. Park Güell, designed by the legendary Antoni Gaudí, is the perfect spot to start your day. The early morning light offers a soft, magical quality that’s ideal for photography. As you walk through the park, the mosaic tiles and organic shapes of Gaudí’s work come alive with color and texture.

Explore the Gothic Quarter’s Artisan Shops

After soaking in the morning light, head towards the Gothic Quarter. This area is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, each filled with unique artisan shops. From handcrafted leather goods to intricate jewelry, these shops offer a glimpse into Barcelona’s rich craft traditions.
